Political Parties in Pakistan Forfeit Seats Over Rigging Claims
Two Pakistani political parties forfeited three provincial assembly seats in Sindh to protest alleged rigging in the February 8 elections, disputing the results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan.
In a significant development, two prominent political parties in Pakistan have announced their decision to forfeit provincial assembly seats in Sindh as a form of protest against alleged rigging in the recent February 8 elections. This move highlights the growing concerns and tensions surrounding the electoral process in the country.

Jamaat-i-Islami Party's Seat Forfeiture
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, a senior leader of the Jamaat-i-Islami Party, took the unusual step of forfeiting his seat in the Sindh province, which he had won in the recent elections. Rehman asserted that the actual winner of the constituency he contested was not him, but rather a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI)-backed independent candidate.
According to the provisional results released by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Rehman had secured victory in the PS-129 constituency Karachi Central VIII with 26,296 votes. However, Rehman alleged discrepancies in the vote count and claimed that his team's calculations indicated that the PTI-backed candidate, Saif Bari, had actually won.
Grand Democratic Alliance's Decision
In a separate development, Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashidi, the chief of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), announced that his party would be vacating two Sindh Assembly seats due to concerns over result manipulation. Rashidi expressed strong criticism of the alleged rigging and rejected the legitimacy of the election.
Protests and Tensions
The decisions by the leaders of the Jamaat-i-Islami Party and the GDA come amidst ongoing protests and demonstrations in Sindh province over allegations of rigging in the elections. Various political parties, including the PTI, Jamaat-i-Islami, Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TL), and Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI), have been disputing the results and claiming that their candidates were deprived of their rightful wins.
The protests have led to disruptions and blockades of highways leading into Karachi, prompting the deployment of heavy contingents of police and rangers to clear the roads. In some instances, police have resorted to using tear gas shells, water cannons, and batons to disperse the crowds.
Legal Challenges and ECP's Response
Following the announcement of the provisional election results, numerous legal petitions have been filed in courts across the country. Candidates from various constituencies have challenged the results, seeking to overturn them and secure their seats.
The Election Commission of Pakistan has acknowledged the occurrence of some irregularities during the elections but has refuted systematic allegations of rigging. The ECP has maintained that relevant forms are available for investigation into any irregularities.
The forfeiture of seats by political parties and the ongoing protests in Pakistan highlight the deep-rooted concerns and disputes surrounding the recent elections. The allegations of rigging and the subsequent legal challenges pose significant challenges to the credibility and legitimacy of the electoral process. It remains to be seen how these issues will be addressed and resolved, and whether the affected parties will find satisfactory solutions to their grievances.
