OpenAI on Friday announced the departure of its co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, citing a review that highlighted a lack of consistent transparency in his communications with the board of directors.

Expressing a loss of confidence in Altman's leadership, the company stated its immediate appointment of Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer, as the interim CEO.

This move drew parallels to Steve Jobs' departure from and subsequent return to Apple in the '80s and '90s. Altman, in response, expressed fondness for his tenure at OpenAI, emphasizing its personal and global significance while commending the talented team he collaborated with.

Following Altman's exit, Satya Nadella from Microsoft reaffirmed the tech giant's commitment to their partnership with OpenAI, underscoring their dedication to delivering AI benefits.

Former Google CEO and Chairman, Eric Schmidt, lauded Altman's achievement in elevating the company's value to $90 billion and leaving a lasting imprint on the world.

Sam Altman's rise to prominence stemmed from his groundbreaking creation, ChatGPT-an AI chatbot capable of generating human-like content swiftly, from poems to artwork.

Concurrently, Greg Brockman, the president and board chairman of OpenAI, will step down as the chairman but continue to serve as the company's president, reporting to the CEO, although the reason behind this change wasn't disclosed in the statement.

The board of OpenAI comprises its chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, along with three non-employee members: Adam D'Angelo, CEO of Quora, Tasha McCauley, a tech entrepreneur, and Helen Toner from the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
