One Person Dead and Twelve Trapped Following Elevator Malfunction at Colorado Gold Mine
A malfunctioning elevator at a former gold mine in Colorado has resulted in one fatality and left 12 individuals trapped, according to Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell. The incident occurred at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, now a tourist attraction near Cripple Creek. Rescue operations are underway to free those stuck underground.

The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, which dates back to the 1800s, ceased operations in the 1960s but continues to offer tours. Visitors can experience a one-hour tour that takes them 100 stories below ground, where they can view gold veins and ride an underground tram. Despite the equipment failure, there was no mine collapse.
Rescue Efforts and Government Support
Governor Jared Polis's office confirmed the ongoing rescue efforts. In a statement, Polis assured that state resources are being deployed to assist in resolving the situation swiftly and safely. "We will do everything possible and assist the county to ensure a speedy and safe resolution of the situation," said Polis.
Cripple Creek, a small town with approximately 1,100 residents, is located southwest of Colorado Springs. The local authorities have scheduled a press conference for later in the day to provide further updates on the situation.
The incident highlights the risks associated with operating historical sites as tourist attractions. While such sites offer unique experiences, safety measures must be rigorously maintained to prevent accidents.
As rescue teams work diligently to reach those trapped, the community remains hopeful for a positive outcome. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of all individuals involved and preventing further casualties.
