New Zealand Airport Implements Three-Minute Limit on Goodbye Hugs to Prevent Traffic Jams
At Dunedin Airport in New Zealand, travellers must now keep their farewells brief. A new rule limits goodbye hugs to three minutes in the drop-off area to avoid traffic congestion. Signs outside the terminal advise those wanting longer farewells to use the parking lot instead. This measure was introduced in September to ensure smooth operations in the revamped passenger drop-off zone.

Daniel De Bono, the airport's CEO, explained that the rule serves as a reminder for quick goodbyes. "It's caused quite a stir," he mentioned to Radio New Zealand. Some people have expressed their discontent, arguing against being told how long they can hug. The signs offer an alternative to stricter measures like wheel clamping or fines seen at other airports.
Quirky Approach to Farewells
Dunedin Airport opted for a unique approach compared to some British airports that charge fees for any drop-offs. De Bono described it as "quirky," aiming to allow everyone a chance for hugs without causing delays. He noted that many spend too long on farewells in the drop-off zone, which can be problematic.
De Bono highlighted that a 20-second hug is sufficient to release hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, which boost well-being. Anything longer might feel awkward, he added. However, enforcement of this rule won't be strict; there won't be any "hug police" monitoring the time.
Alternative Farewell Options
Visitors who wish to extend their embraces can do so in the parking lot, where they can hug for up to 15 minutes without any charge. This option provides a space for more heartfelt goodbyes without disrupting traffic flow at the terminal.
The airport's decision reflects its commitment to maintaining order while accommodating passengers' emotional needs. By offering a designated area for longer farewells, Dunedin Airport balances efficiency with empathy.
