New York Police Confirm Identity of Woman Killed in Subway Train Arson Incident
Authorities in New York have identified a woman who tragically died after being set on fire on a subway train in Brooklyn. The victim, Debrina Kawam, was 61 years old and had an address in Toms River, New Jersey. The incident occurred on December 22, and police used forensic evidence and video footage to confirm her identity.

The suspect, Sebastian Zapeta, was apprehended shortly after police released images of him. He faces charges of murder and arson and remains in custody. Federal immigration officials revealed that Zapeta, aged 33, is from Guatemala and entered the United States illegally.
Incident Details and Legal Proceedings
Prosecutors allege that Zapeta set Kawam on fire while she was asleep on a stationary F train at Coney Island station. He reportedly intensified the flames using a shirt before sitting nearby to watch the tragic scene unfold. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez described the act as "a malicious deed" against a vulnerable individual.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences to Kawam's family during a press briefing. He mentioned that she had briefly stayed in the city's homeless shelter system but did not specify when. "Hearts go out to the family, a horrific incident to have to live through," Adams stated. He emphasised that people should not be living on the subway system but rather in places where they can receive care.
Community Impact and Official Statements
The mayor highlighted how such incidents affect the sense of safety among New Yorkers. He reiterated his stance that individuals should not reside within the subway system. This tragic event underscores the need for more secure living arrangements for vulnerable populations.
Zapeta's indictment is scheduled to be unsealed on January 7. The case has drawn significant attention due to its shocking nature and the broader implications for public safety in New York City's transit system.
This incident has sparked discussions about safety measures and support systems for those experiencing homelessness in urban areas. It serves as a grim reminder of the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals in public spaces.
