Nepal Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba Calls for Investigation into Nepali Student's Death in Odisha
Nepal's Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, has urged Odisha's Education Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, to ensure a fair investigation into the death of a Nepalese student. She also requested legal action against those responsible. During a phone call, she emphasised the need for a safe environment for other Nepalese students at the university in Odisha.

Prakriti Lamsal, a 20-year-old third-year B Tech Computer Science student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, allegedly took her own life on February 16. This incident has caused unrest on campus. In response, Suryabanshi assured that the Odisha government is treating the matter seriously and has established a high-level committee to investigate and ensure justice for Lamsal.
Safety Measures and Student Support
The Odisha government has implemented measures to ensure the safety of Nepalese students residing in hostels and to facilitate the resumption of their studies. Approximately 1,000 Nepalese students are currently enrolled at KIIT. Meanwhile, 95 Nepalese students who were reportedly expelled from KIIT have returned home through the Birgunj border in Parsa district.
Nishan Raj Gautam, acting Chief District Officer of Parsa, confirmed that 76 male and 19 female students have crossed back into Nepal via the Birgunj entry point. Leaders and officials from both countries have maintained constant communication since the incident occurred on Sunday.
Government Initiatives and Assistance
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu reported that the Odisha government has issued a notice to its Higher Education Department. The department has established a 24/7 help desk to ensure student safety and security, facilitate their safe return, and protect their academic interests. Kali Prasanna Mohapatra, IAS director of Higher Education, has been appointed as the nodal officer with Rajat Manasingh as deputy director to assist him.
The help desk is staffed by nine personnel and operates around the clock. It aims to reach out to affected students promptly to address their concerns or assist with their return. The department encourages affected students to contact the help desk for support regarding their return to the institution.
Memorial Scholarship Announcement
In honour of Prakriti Lamsal, KIIT announced a scholarship in her memory. This announcement was made by Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT and KISS, who met with Lamsal's father and uncle to express his condolences. A statement from the institute confirmed this gesture.
The Odisha government has taken serious note of the unfortunate incident at KIIT in Bhubaneswar concerning Lamsal's tragic death and subsequent institutional actions. The government remains committed to ensuring justice and providing necessary support to all affected students.
