Nawaz Sharif's Gucci Fashion Statement Raises Eyebrows: A Cap For Controversy At Political Rally
At an election rally in Pakistan's Punjab province, Nawaz Sharif, the ex-PM, turned heads by wearing a cap worth PKR 1 about Rs30,000.
The extravagant choice has stirred controversy in cash-strapped Pakistan.

Sharif's Gucci Fashion Creates Trouble
After investigating the cap's price, a consensus emerged among Pakistanis-Gen Z doesn't approve of either the price of the Gucci cap or the way it looked on Sharif.
One X user asked, "Why is Nawaz Sharif wearing the Gucci hat that every wanna-be gangster wears in high school?" Another remarked, "If mere tax ke paise had a face (If my tax money had a face)."
Even Gucci was looped in. A disgruntled user tweeted, tagging the brand, asking them to take note of the 'bad name' being brought to the company because of him, "Dear @gucci. Nawaz Sharif is a corrupt Pakistani politician. He has amassed great wealth by siphoning public money from a poor nation. He is wearing your signature cap, a brand which is held in high esteem. Nawaz Sharif wearing it has given Gucci a bad name. note n action accordingly."
Amid a severe economic crisis marked by skyrocketing costs of essential goods such as petrol, power, and food, Sharif's choice of accessory adds another dimension to the ongoing debate.
The deplorable state of economic affairs in the country is visible in the increasing pressures on local prices, international and fiscal balances, exchange rates, and foreign reserves. The political uncertainty is also playing a major role in the ongoing crisis.
"Gucci Cap Rs 128,000/- aur batain ghareebon ki, (and he talks about the poor)," wrote another user.
The sight of a political leader, like Sharif, seeking votes from the public while flaunting his expensive wardrobe isn't easy on the eyes of Pakistanis.
Repeated Offenses: Nawaz Sharif's Luxurious Lifestyle Criticized Again
Nawaz Sharif has faced criticism multiple times for his luxury lifestyle. In 2023, he was seen shopping at Harrods in London, and a video of him shopping at a Louis Vuitton store went viral. The same year, his choice of a Gucci scarf upon returning to Pakistan sparked public disdain on social media.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, another politician, faced a similar backlash in 2022 for wearing expensive Gucci shoes. Journalist Arif Rafiq commented on the trend, highlighting the irony of wealthy leaders seeking financial help for their countries while indulging in luxury.
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan also faced public anger for wearing a designer salwar kurta in 2019, with citizens criticizing the leaders for their extravagant choices. After the recent Gucci cap incident, comparisons between Sharif and Khan have resurfaced.
