Emergency Teams Race to Contain Ammonia Leak
Governor Tate Reeves confirmed that specialized hazmat and environmental teams were deployed soon after reports of an anhydrous ammonia leak emerged. "Thank you to all of Mississippi's first responders and emergency managers for quickly responding to the leak," Reeves posted on X. He also said that no injuries or deaths had been reported at the scene.
Images and videos shared online showed a thick, yellowish cloud rising over the plant. Officials say the facility contains several nitric acid units and an ammonia plant capable of storing up to 48,000 tons of ammonia, though the exact volume on-site during the explosion remains unclear.
'The House Shook,' Says Local Resident
For those living nearby, the explosion was both sudden and frightening. Andre Robinson, who lives about half a mile from the site, said he was cooking with his son when the noise hit.
"There was a boom and then the house shook," Robinson recalled. "We're used to the ammonia smell, but not that bad." He said he and his family quickly left their home and evacuated to Jackson.
The company later released a statement confirming that "all employees and contractors on site at the time of the incident have been safely accounted for."
Highway Closed, Air Monitoring Underway
As a safety precaution, authorities temporarily closed part of U.S. Route 49E while response crews conducted air quality checks. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality stated that "air monitoring operations are underway and will continue as long as necessary to ensure public safety."
The agency has since been working with local emergency management teams to track wind direction and chemical dispersion.
Chemical Risks and Ongoing Precautions
Anhydrous ammonia, used widely as an agricultural fertilizer, poses serious health risks when released in gas or liquid form. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture warns that direct contact can cause chemical burns and respiratory distress.
Yazoo City, a quiet community roughly 50 miles north of Jackson, has been placed under temporary environmental watch while officials continue to assess the situation. Residents have been advised to remain alert for official updates before returning to their homes.
