Matt Gaetz Announces He Will Not Return to Congress After Withdrawing from Attorney General Nomination
Matt Gaetz, a former representative from Florida, announced on Friday that he will not return to Congress. This decision follows his withdrawal from consideration for the attorney general position under President-elect Donald Trump. Gaetz faces increasing allegations of sexual misconduct. "I'm still going to be in the fight, but it's going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress," Gaetz stated to conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

The announcement came shortly after Gaetz stepped back from the Cabinet nomination process. This move was influenced by ongoing federal and House Ethics investigations, which raised doubts about his confirmation as the nation's chief federal law enforcement officer. Gaetz, aged 42, has consistently denied all allegations against him.
Trump's New Attorney General Nominee
Following Gaetz's withdrawal, Trump nominated Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general. Bondi brings extensive legal experience and is known for her loyalty, a trait highly valued by Trump. Her nomination aligns with Trump's preference for placing loyalists in key positions within the Justice Department.
Gaetz's nomination had initially surprised many within the Justice Department. It was seen as part of Trump's strategy to appoint a loyalist in response to previous criminal cases against him. However, Gaetz's sudden resignation from Congress on the same day as his nomination left many colleagues puzzled.
Gaetz's Future Plans
Despite winning reelection earlier this month, Gaetz confirmed he will not return to Congress for another term starting January 3. He expressed that after 14 years in state and national politics, including eight years in Congress, it is time for a change. "I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress," he remarked.
The future remains uncertain for Gaetz as he steps away from his congressional role. His decision marks a significant shift in his political career amid ongoing controversies and investigations.
