Underdog Mohamed Muiz Emerges Victorious in Maldives Presidential Elections
In a surprising turn of events, opposition candidate Mohamed Muiz emerged victorious in the Maldives presidential runoff on Saturday. As per local media reports, Muiz secured more than 53% of the vote. The election has taken on significant geopolitical implications, effectively becoming a referendum on which regional power — India or China — will wield the most influence over this Indian Ocean archipelago nation.
Underdog Victory

Mihaaru News reported that incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received only 46% of the votes. Muiz's victory margin was reportedly more than 18,000 votes. Official results were expected to be announced later Sunday.
The triumph comes as an unexpected development for Muiz who entered the political battlefield as an underdog and was named as a fallback candidate closer to the nomination deadline after his party’s leader and former President Abdulla Yameen was prevented from contesting by the Supreme Court due to his ongoing prison sentence for charges related to money laundering and corruption.
A Reflection of Patriotism
"Today's result is a reflection of the patriotism of our people. A call on all our neighbours and bilateral partners to fully respect our independence and sovereignty," said Mohamed Shareef, a top official from Muiz's party in conversation with The Associated Press. He also emphasized that it served as a mandate for Muiz to resurrect the economy along with advocating for release of political prisoners incarcerated during Yameen’s rule.
Geopolitical Implications
The election outcome holds considerable significance beyond national borders given its potential impact on regional geopolitics involving India and China. Both nations have vested interests in this strategically located island nation known for its luxury resorts frequented by international tourists.
India has traditionally been one of Maldives' closest allies; however, relations between the two countries have been strained in recent years due to Yameen's pro-China stance. His policies had led Maldives into a debt trap, pushing it further towards China’s sphere of influence. The victory of Muiz could potentially reset the balance and restore closer ties with India.
In conclusion, Mohamed Muiz's unexpected win in the Maldives presidential runoff not only signifies a change in domestic political dynamics but also carries potential implications for regional geopolitics involving India and China. This election has seen a strong assertion of national sovereignty by the people of Maldives who have voted for an underdog candidate against an incumbent president. It remains to be seen how this will impact international relations and whether it will lead to a shift away from Chinese influence towards stronger ties with India.
