Abidjan Ivory Coast: President Removes Prime Minister and Dissolves Government
The West African nation of the Ivory Coast has witnessed another significant political reshuffle as President Alassane Ouattara dissolved the government and removed Prime Minister Patrick Achi from his position, according to an announcement by a senior public official on October 6th. The move comes as part of the president's constitutional powers, marking a continuation of changes in leadership ahead of an election scheduled for 2025.
Change in Leadership

Abdourahmane Cisse, the presidency’s secretary-general, revealed that President Ouattara signed a decree terminating the roles of Prime Minister Patrick Achi and other government members. This makes it three prime ministers since 2020 for Ivory Coast. Achi assumed office following Hamed Bakayoko's death due to cancer in March 2021. Interestingly, Bakayoko himself had succeeded his predecessor who also passed away while serving in office.
A Transition Phase
In his statement, Cisse conveyed President Ouattara's gratitude towards outgoing Prime Minister Patrick Achi and all government members for their dedication to national service over their tenure. He further stated that these officials would continue with their duties until later this month when a new government is expected to be established.
Upcoming Reshuffle
In September earlier this year, President Ouattara declared plans for a ministerial reshuffle set to occur after the Ivorian Senate convenes and elects its new president this month. The formation of a new government is anticipated upon conclusion of the Senate meeting.
As we approach closer to Ivory Coast's next elections slated for 2025, such political shake-ups reflect inherent instability within its governance structure or could be strategic maneuvers aimed at consolidating power or appeasing various factions within society. However, what remains crucial is how these changes will impact the nation's political trajectory and whether they will pave the way for a stable, efficient, and inclusive governance model.
Conclusion
The recent dissolution of government and removal of Prime Minister Patrick Achi by President Ouattara marks yet another significant change in Ivory Coast’s political landscape. As this West African nation prepares for its upcoming elections in 2025, it remains to be seen how these changes will influence its future course. The transition phase is critical as it could determine the country's stability and progress. It also raises questions about leadership succession given that two previous prime ministers died while serving their terms. Amidst these uncertainties, one thing is clear - Ivory Coast stands at an important juncture in its history with decisions taken now having long-term implications on its politics and society.
