Italy Releases Iranian Citizen Mohammad Abedini Wanted by US for Drone Attack in Jordan
Italy has released Mohammad Abedini, an Iranian citizen wanted by the US for a drone attack in Jordan that killed three Americans last year. This decision followed a request from Italy's justice minister to revoke his arrest. Abedini has already returned to Iran, as reported by Iranian state TV on Sunday.

Abedini was initially arrested on December 16 under a US warrant. He was due to appear in a Milan court on Wednesday regarding his request for house arrest while awaiting extradition to the US. The US Justice Department accuses him of providing drone technology used in a January 2024 attack on a US base in Jordan.
Extradition Treaty and Legal Challenges
The Italian Justice Ministry released a statement explaining that extradition under Italy-US treaties requires the crime to be punishable under both countries' laws. In this case, the charge against Abedini, related to violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, does not align with any crime recognized by Italian law.
The release of Abedini followed efforts by Iran's foreign ministry and discussions between Iran's intelligence ministry and Italian intelligence services. This diplomatic engagement was crucial in securing his return to Iran.
Diplomatic Efforts and Negotiations
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni acknowledged the role of "diplomatic triangulation" involving Iran and the United States in securing journalist Cecilia Sala's release. Sala was detained in Iran shortly after Abedini's arrest and was believed to be held as leverage for his release. She returned home last week.
Meloni's surprise visit to Florida, where she met US President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, played a part in these negotiations. This meeting marked the first confirmation of Washington's involvement in the talks.
The case highlights the complexities of international diplomacy and legal systems when dealing with extradition requests and political negotiations. The resolution of this situation underscores the importance of diplomatic channels in resolving such sensitive issues.
