Israeli Airstrikes Result in Dozens of Casualties in Lebanon as Hezbollah Confirms Death of Senior Commander
Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have resulted in significant casualties, with dozens killed, including key Hezbollah figures. Among those confirmed dead is Nabil Kaouk, a senior leader within Hezbollah. The strikes have intensified over the past week, targeting various regions and causing widespread destruction. The Lebanese health ministry reported that at least 24 people died near Sidon and 21 more in Baalbek Hermel due to these attacks.

Hezbollah's Response and Escalation
In retaliation, Hezbollah has increased its attacks on Israel, launching hundreds of rockets and drones daily. Despite the escalation, most of these attacks have been intercepted by Israel's air defence systems. The Israeli military claims its operations have significantly weakened Hezbollah's capabilities, preventing even more launches.
The conflict has forced many Lebanese to flee their homes, with the government estimating that around 250,000 people are now in shelters. Many others are staying with friends or relatives or camping out on the streets. The ongoing violence has raised fears of a broader regional conflict.
Impact on Civilians and Infrastructure
The strikes have not only targeted militants but also civilian areas, leading to a rising death toll. In Sidon, a building collapse was captured on video as neighbours filmed the aftermath. Rescue efforts continue amidst the rubble, with reports of families trapped beneath debris. The Lebanese health ministry noted that 14 medics have died in recent days.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expanded his Cabinet by appointing Gideon Saar, a former rival. Saar will join the Security Cabinet to help manage the ongoing conflict. This move strengthens Netanyahu's coalition amid escalating tensions with Hezbollah.
International Reactions and Developments
The United States has expressed concern over the situation. White House national security spokesman John Kirby stated that Israel's strikes have severely impacted Hezbollah's leadership structure. However, he warned that Hezbollah might attempt to rebuild quickly. The US continues to advocate for a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
In Yemen, Israeli forces targeted Houthi positions following an attack on Ben Gurion airport. The strikes hit power plants and ports in Hodeida, resulting in casualties and damage. The Houthis claimed they had taken precautions before the strikes but vowed to continue their attacks on shipping routes and Israel.
Historical Context and Current Dynamics
Hezbollah's actions are part of a broader alliance with Hamas against Israel, supported by Iran. This alliance has led to increased hostilities since Hamas attacked from Gaza on October 7th. The conflict has escalated towards a potential all-out war, with both sides showing no signs of backing down.
Israel aims to return around 60,000 citizens to northern communities evacuated nearly a year ago. However, Hezbollah insists it will only cease its rocket fire if there is a ceasefire in Gaza. Despite indirect negotiations led by international mediators, such an agreement remains elusive.
The situation remains tense as both sides continue their military operations. The international community watches closely as efforts for peace face significant challenges amidst ongoing violence and political manoeuvring in the region.
