Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Appoints Former Rival Gideon Saar to Strengthen Coalition Government
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expanded his coalition by appointing Gideon Saar to his Cabinet. Saar, a former rival, will serve as a minister without portfolio and join the Security Cabinet. This body manages Israel's ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The appointment strengthens Netanyahu's position amid several domestic challenges.

Saar had initially aimed to replace Defence Minister Yoav Gallant but remained unsuccessful. The deal fell apart due to intensified clashes with Hezbollah along Israel's northern border. Gallant, who enjoys popularity, continues in his role for now. Saar's relationship with Netanyahu has been strained, stemming from his departure from the Likud party four years ago.
Political Dynamics and Ideologies
Saar left Likud after accusing Netanyahu of turning it into a "cult of personality" while facing corruption charges. Despite their differences, both share a hard-line stance against Israel's Arab adversaries. Saar has advocated for the destruction of Hamas and tougher actions against Iran, Hezbollah's sponsor. He also opposes a Palestinian state, aligning with Netanyahu's views.
The joint statement from Netanyahu and Saar emphasized setting aside differences for national interest. This move is partly motivated by domestic politics, as Netanyahu faces key political battles soon. These include drafting ultra-Orthodox men into the army, passing a budget, and dealing with his corruption trial. Saar is expected to assist in these areas.
Impact on Coalition and Future Prospects
Saar's appointment may reduce the influence of ultranationalist coalition members like Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir. These religious ideologues have threatened to destabilize the government if Netanyahu concedes too much in cease-fire negotiations. Ben-Gvir has faced international criticism for provocative actions at a contested Jerusalem holy site.
The agreement on Sunday provides Saar an opportunity to revive his political career and potentially aim for the prime minister position in the future. It also expands Netanyahu's majority coalition to 68 seats in the 120-seat parliament, bolstering his government's stability amidst ongoing challenges.
