Iranian Fighter Jet Crash Claims Lives of Two Pilots During Test Flight in Southern Iran
An Iranian fighter jet crashed in the southern region of the country, resulting in the deaths of two pilots, according to state media. The pilots were identified as Col. Hamid Reza Ranjbar and Col. Manouchehr Pirzadeh. They were conducting a test flight following an overhaul of the aircraft. The incident occurred near Firouzabad, approximately 770 kilometers south of Tehran.

Details of the Crash
The type of aircraft involved in the crash was not specified, nor was the cause of the accident provided in the report. Video footage from the Fars news agency, which is affiliated with the military, showed white smoke rising from the wreckage. Iran's air force operates a mix of U.S.-made military planes acquired before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, including the American-made Tomcat F-14, as well as Russian MiG and Sukhoi models.
Decades of Western sanctions have hindered Iran's ability to procure spare parts and maintain its aging fleet. This has led to a history of crashes involving its deteriorating aircraft. In 2022, a fighter jet crashed in Iran's central desert, killing both pilots. Earlier that year, another jet crashed onto a soccer field in Tabriz, resulting in the deaths of both pilots and a civilian.
Challenges Facing Iran's Air Force
The Iranian air force faces significant challenges due to its outdated fleet and difficulties in obtaining necessary parts for maintenance. The sanctions imposed by Western countries have exacerbated these issues, making it increasingly difficult to keep their aircraft operational. This has resulted in several tragic accidents over recent years.
Despite these challenges, Iran continues to operate its diverse fleet of military aircraft. The combination of American and Russian-made planes reflects the country's historical ties and current geopolitical alliances. However, maintaining these aging aircraft remains a significant hurdle for Iran's military capabilities.
The recent crash highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and reliability of Iran's military aviation sector. As long as sanctions remain in place, it is likely that these issues will persist, posing risks to both pilots and civilians alike.
