Iran Vs Israel: India Calls For Diplomatic De-Escalation
India has distanced itself from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's (SCO) condemnation of Israel's military actions against Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasised India's independent stance, urging diplomatic dialogue to de-escalate rising regional tensions. The SCO, a China-led bloc including Russia, Pakistan, and Iran, criticised Israel's airstrikes on June 13 as violations of Iran's sovereignty and threats to peace.
The SCO accused Israel of targeting civilian infrastructure and causing casualties, including children. They labelled these actions as gross violations of international law and the UN Charter. However, India clarified its position by stating it did not participate in drafting or discussing the SCO's statement. Instead, India reiterated its call for de-escalation through diplomacy.

India's Independent Stance
India's response highlights its commitment to maintaining an independent foreign policy. The MEA stated that India had already expressed its position on June 13 and chose not to engage in discussions leading to the SCO's joint statement. "Our view has consistently been in favour of de-escalation. We urge all parties to prioritise diplomacy and dialogue," the MEA said.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reportedly communicated with both Israeli and Iranian counterparts earlier this week. He expressed India's concern over escalating tensions and called for restraint from both sides. This approach reflects India's delicate balancing act in the region.
Rising Tensions Between Israel and Iran
The conflict between Israel and Iran has intensified recently. On Friday, Israel launched a significant aerial offensive targeting Iran's military and nuclear sites, including the Natanz facility. This attack resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian scientists and military officers.
In retaliation, Iran fired approximately 200 ballistic missiles at Israeli targets. Iranian state media reported that at least 60 civilians, including 20 children, were killed in an Israeli strike on a residential complex. Iran's UN envoy reported a total of 78 deaths from the Israeli offensive.
Balancing Regional Relationships
India values its strong defense and economic ties with Israel while maintaining a longstanding relationship with Iran. This relationship is crucial for energy needs and connectivity initiatives like the Chabahar Port project. By distancing itself from the SCO statement, India reinforces its independent foreign policy approach.
