Indian-Origin Woman's Death Inside Walmart Oven: Here's What Canada Police Say

Canadian police have wrapped up their investigation into the death of Gursimran Kaur, an Indian-origin woman found deceased in a Walmart store's bakery oven. The Halifax police confirmed that her death was not suspicious and no foul play was involved. The 19-year-old's body was discovered on October 19 by her mother, who also worked at the store.

Investigation Details

Halifax Regional Police Public Information Officer Martin Cromwell stated, "We understand that there have been many questions about what happened. Thorough investigations take time." He explained that multiple interviews were conducted and video footage reviewed, leading to the conclusion that no one else was involved. Despite public interest, some questions remain unanswered.

The investigation was described as "complex" by Halifax police last month, involving several partner agencies. Reports indicate that Gursimran Kaur had been employed at Walmart for two years alongside her mother. Her father and brother reside in India.

Employee Reactions

Following her death, some Walmart employees speculated that Ms Kaur might have been trapped in the oven and "baked to death." A TikTok video by co-worker Chris Breezie gained attention, where she demonstrated how the oven operates. Breezie mentioned that the oven could be turned on from outside and had a difficult-to-open door handle.

Breezie, standing at 5 foot 1, showed how she would need to crouch to enter the oven. She highlighted an emergency latch inside and noted no tasks required workers to enter physically. "There is no way possible somebody could lock themselves in there," she asserted in the video.

Safety Concerns

Another employee named Mary expressed disbelief over the incident, stating it "doesn't make any sense" since the door doesn't close automatically. She explained that it requires a push to hear a click before closing. Mary added, "I'm not trying to theorize or form a conspiracy; it's just hard to wrap my head around it when Walmart's bakery ovens are so safe to use."

A statement regarding the sudden death investigation was shared on Twitter by Halifax Police on November 18, 2024.

The tragic event has left many questions unanswered despite thorough investigations. While safety concerns have been raised by employees, authorities maintain there is no evidence of foul play in Gursimran Kaur's death.
