India Issues Travel Advisory As Thailand-Cambodia Border Clashes Turn Deadly
Amid escalating violence along the Thailand-Cambodia border, the Indian Embassy in Cambodia has issued a travel advisory, urging Indian nationals to steer clear of the affected regions. The advisory comes as clashes between the two Southeast Asian nations intensify, with the death toll continuing to rise.
"In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas," the Embassy stated. It also released an emergency contact number for Indian citizens currently in Cambodia: +855 92881676. For assistance, they may also email the consular section at [email protected].

According to the Associated Press, Cambodia reported 12 additional deaths from the conflict on Saturday, pushing the total number of fatalities to 32. General Maly Socheata, spokesperson for Cambodia's Ministry of National Defence, said the recent casualties included seven civilians and five soldiers, all killed during two days of fighting. Previously, the conflict had claimed the life of a man who died when a Thai rocket struck the pagoda he was sheltering in.
With hostilities entering their third consecutive day, thousands have been forced to flee from their homes near the contested border areas.
UN Security Council Meets Over Thailand-Cambodia Tensions
On Friday, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened a closed-door emergency meeting in New York to discuss the border clashes. Although no official statement has been issued, a council diplomat revealed that all 15 member states urged both Thailand and Cambodia to exercise restraint, deescalate the situation, and pursue a peaceful resolution.
The UNSC also encouraged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to take an active role in resolving the dispute. Malaysia, which currently chairs ASEAN and includes both countries in the bloc, issued a call to end hostilities and offered to mediate between the parties.
Background of the Conflict
The border between Thailand and Cambodia, stretching approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles), has long been a point of contention, though previous flare-ups have typically remained limited in scope. The last major conflict occurred in 2011, resulting in 20 fatalities.
The current crisis was triggered in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a border confrontation, sparking a diplomatic standoff and political turmoil within Thailand. Tensions escalated further on Wednesday when a land mine injured five Thai soldiers. In response, Thai authorities closed the border and expelled Cambodia's ambassador. Clashes erupted along the border the following day.
