India-China Talks: Strengthening Border Peace After Disengagement Success
India and China held diplomatic talks on Thursday, reviewing the situation in border areas following a successful disengagement of troops in Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh.
The talks, part of the 32nd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC), come a month after both countries' armies completed their disengagement process, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The Indian delegation was led by Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Chinese delegation was headed by Hong Liang, Director General of the Boundary & Oceanic Affairs Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Key Highlights of the Meeting:
-
Positive Progress on Disengagement: The two sides reaffirmed the successful implementation of the most recent disengagement agreement, which resolved issues that had emerged in 2020. This progress marks an important step in de-escalating tensions along the border.
- Preparations for Future Dialogue: Both nations prepared for the next meeting of the Special Representatives, scheduled to take place following decisions made by their leaders during a meeting in Kazan on October 23, 2024.
- Review of Border Areas: The meeting focused on reviewing the situation in the border areas and drawing lessons from past events to prevent their recurrence. Both parties emphasized the significance of maintaining regular diplomatic and military exchanges through established mechanisms to ensure peace.
- Agreement on Border Management: The discussions underscored the need for effective border management, along with the maintenance of peace and tranquillity, in line with bilateral agreements and protocols that have been previously established.
The talks concluded with both parties agreeing to continue dialogue and ensure the proper management of border-related concerns, as reported by Hindustan Times. During the visit, the leader of the Chinese delegation also met with India's Foreign Secretary to further strengthen the diplomatic ties.
Ongoing Efforts to Stabilize Bilateral Relations
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently remarked that the disengagement process was a part of a larger effort toward de-escalation and resolution of the ongoing bilateral issues between India and China. He clarified that while disengagement was a positive step, it was not a complete reset in relations and emphasized the need for continued stability in the relationship.
This latest round of talks signals an ongoing commitment to peace and cooperation along the border and the broader Indo-China relationship. Both nations have committed to further diplomatic efforts to ensure stability in the region.
