Independence Day Celebration Highlights Resilience and Courage of People in South Africa

South African Minister Solly Malatsi commended India's Independence Day as a symbol of resilience and courage. He emphasised the strong ties between India and South Africa, rooted in shared history and values.

South African Minister Solly Malatsi highlighted the significance of India's Independence Day, emphasising the resilience and courage of its people. Speaking at the 79th Independence Day event hosted by the Indian High Commission in Pretoria, Malatsi praised the enduring spirit of those who reclaimed their destiny. He was the chief guest at this celebration.

Malatsi supported the views shared by High Commissioner Prabhat Kumar, who spoke earlier. Kumar remarked, "The friendship between India and South Africa is rooted in our shared history of resilience against colonial oppression nurtured by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, who championed justice, dignity and equality." He further noted that this legacy thrives today through strong economic, cultural, and interpersonal connections.

Shared History and Visionary Leadership

The minister acknowledged the visionary leadership of Gandhi and Nehru, which laid the groundwork for India’s vibrant democracy. Malatsi stated that India is home to 1.7 million people of Indian origin, symbolising a bond forged through shared struggles. He also highlighted the influence of Gandhi's principles and Nelson Mandela's philosophy on both nations as they strive to build prosperous societies.

Malatsi reflected on India's rich heritage spanning 5,000 years, noting its current status as a global leader. He said, "Today India stands in the forefront of technology and innovation as a global leader with the power to transform lives." This recognition underscores India's significant role in technological advancements and innovation.

Global Cooperation and Development

Kumar mentioned that India and South Africa collaborate on international platforms like the United Nations, BRICS, IBSA, and the G20. These partnerships aim to advocate for a fairer world order. Malatsi echoed this sentiment by highlighting India's successful development programmes focusing on technology and scientific progress.

"India’s successful multi-faceted development programmes and its applications focusing on technology and scientific advancement are laudable," Malatsi stated. He expressed South Africa's intention to promote cooperation in these areas, recognising India's achievements as exemplary.

The celebration underscored the enduring friendship between India and South Africa, rooted in a shared history of overcoming colonial oppression. The event highlighted how both nations continue to draw inspiration from their past leaders while working together towards a prosperous future.
