In First Speech As UK PM, Keir Starmer Says, 'We Will Rebuild Britain, Brick by Brick'

Keir Starmer, the new Prime Minister of the UK, has promised to lead a government dedicated to serving the nation and rebuilding trust in politics. He made this commitment during his first speech as Prime Minister outside 10 Downing Street on July 5, 2024.

Starmer acknowledged the widespread disillusionment with politics and assured the public that his administration would work tirelessly to restore faith in government. Accompanied by his wife, Victoria, he received applause from supporters as they arrived at their new residence.

Focus on National Renewal

In his speech, Starmer emphasised the need for national renewal and invited everyone to join his government in this mission. "With respect and humility, I invite everyone to join this government of service in our mission for national renewal," he said.

He also highlighted the importance of rebuilding Britain's infrastructure of opportunity. "The work of change starts now. We will rebuild Britain, brick by brick, focusing on rebuilding the infrastructure of opportunity," Starmer stated.

Praise for Rishi Sunak

Starmer took a moment to commend Rishi Sunak for being the UK's first British Asian Prime Minister. He acknowledged Sunak's dedication and hard work during his tenure. "The extra effort that that will have required should not be underestimated by anyone," he said.

He further added that his government would be guided solely by the determination to serve the public interest. "From now on, you have a government unburdened by doctrine, guided only by the determination to serve your interest," Starmer affirmed.

Acknowledging Challenges Ahead

Starmer recognised that transforming a country is a complex task that requires time and effort. "Transforming a country isn't like flipping a switch; it will take time. But we start now," he remarked.

He stressed that service is fundamental to hope and called for a profound reset of the nation's identity. "Service is the foundation of hope. Our nation needs a profound reset, a rediscovery of who we are," he said.

The Labour leader officially became Prime Minister following his party's significant victory in the elections after more than a decade in opposition. His appointment was formalised during a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace with King Charles III.

Starmer concluded his speech with a pledge to fight every day until public trust is restored. "My government will fight every day until you believe again," he promised.
