Hurricane Milton: Death Toll Rises To 14, Power Outage Affect Millions
The aftermath of Hurricane Milton has left significant destruction, with the death toll rising to 14 in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, ANI reported.
One of the victims, a woman in her late 70s, died after being struck by a falling tree branch during post-hurricane clean-up efforts. The incident occurred shortly after 11:00 am ET on Thursday. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw offered his condolences, stating, "Although the storm has passed, its devastation continues to affect our community. Our hearts go out to the family as they mourn their loss."

Hurricane Milton, which made landfall as a Category 3 storm after weakening from Category 5, caused widespread disruption. More than 2.9 million households in Florida lost power. In St. Lucie County, a tragic rescue operation unfolded at a mobile home park where 25 individuals were saved, but six people lost their lives. Sheriff Keith Pearson noted that search efforts continue, though the difficult conditions are slowing progress through the debris.
US President Joe Biden reached out to the affected, urging safety and caution through a series of posts on X. He emphasized the importance of staying indoors to avoid the perils of downed power lines and road washouts, reassuring that help was en route.
Moreover, he acknowledged the collective bravery and solidarity exhibited by Americans in the face of disaster, ensuring those affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene that they were not alone, stating, "To all the people impacted by Hurricanes Milton and Helene: We've got your back."
The situation on the ground revealed a dire need for resources, with a significant portion of Florida's gas stations running dry. Reports indicated that over 23 percent of stations in Florida were out of fuel, a figure that soared above 59 percent in the vicinity of Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg. This scarcity of fuel underscored the logistical challenges in the recovery process.
Adding to the severity, various cities faced tornado warnings, further complicating the already daunting task of navigating hurricane and storm surge warnings. These overlapping natural calamities underscored the multifaceted dangers posed by Hurricane Milton, not just through its immediate impact but also through the cascading effects on infrastructure and public safety.
In summary, Hurricane Milton's passage has left a trail of destruction, loss, and a community in mourning. From the tragic death in Hillsborough County to the extensive power outages and the critical fuel shortages, the hurricane's impact is far-reaching. Amidst these challenges, the resilience and unity shown by the affected communities, bolstered by national support and leadership, highlight the ongoing recovery efforts and the collective will to rebuild and recover.
