Withdrawal from Miss South Africa Competition
Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition earlier this year, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of her family. Her decision came in the wake of a backlash that exposed deep-seated anti-foreigner sentiments in South Africa. The controversy began when her Nigerian heritage attracted xenophobic attacks after she was announced as a finalist in the Miss South Africa pageant.
Investigation into Identity Claims
The situation escalated when the South African government initiated an investigation into claims that Adetshina's mother might have stolen the identity of a South African woman. These allegations further complicated Adetshina’s participation and placed her at the centre of a highly charged debate on nationality and identity in South Africa.
A Second Chance in Nigeria
Despite not having lived in Nigeria for over 20 years, Adetshina was invited by the organisers of the Miss Universe Nigeria contest to participate in their final. This invitation was seen as an opportunity for her to represent her father's native land on an international stage. Following her victory in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, Adetshina expressed her emotions: "This journey has been a tough one for me, and I am so proud of myself. I'm truly grateful for the love and support."
Gratitude Amidst Controversy
Despite the nationality controversy, Adetshina remains grateful for the support she received from South Africa, a country she continues to love. Her comments reflect the resilience and determination that saw her through the challenges she faced during both competitions.
Calls for Unity
In response to the broader implications of the controversy, Paula Ezendu, the first runner-up in the Nigerian contest, emphasized the need for unity and understanding: "We need to stop with the xenophobia and tribalism. We're all one family, we're all human beings."
Looking Ahead to Miss Universe
Adetshina is now set to represent Nigeria at the international Miss Universe competition in November. As she prepares for this prestigious event, she remains confident and optimistic, declaring to reporters, "I know we are going to win."
