Historic Escalation: US Launches Unprecedented Strikes On Iran’s Nuclear Sites
In a move that marks a dramatic departure from decades of U.S. foreign policy, American B-2 stealth bombers conducted airstrikes against three of Iran's most critical nuclear facilities early Sunday morning local time. The operation, personally announced by President Donald Trump via social media on Saturday evening, targeted the underground enrichment site at Fordow, along with facilities at Natanz and Esfahan-each central to Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The decision to strike directly inside Iran is unprecedented in recent U.S. history. While Washington has long relied on sanctions and diplomacy to contain Tehran's nuclear programme, the current administration, under mounting pressure from Israel and congressional allies, opted for direct military intervention after concluding that diplomatic efforts had reached a dead end. This move comes on the ninth day of heightened conflict between Israel and Iran, with Israeli forces having already launched extensive airstrikes against Iranian military and nuclear targets.

B-2 stealth bombers, stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and recently deployed to Guam, were uniquely suited for the mission. These aircraft are the only ones capable of carrying the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a 30,000-pound bunker-busting bomb designed to penetrate up to 61 meters underground before detonating-making it the ideal weapon to target Fordow's deeply buried, heavily fortified infrastructure. According to U.S. officials, a "full payload" of these bombs was deployed against Fordow, the primary objective of the operation.
President Trump described the mission as 'very successful,' noting that all aircraft had exited Iranian airspace and were safely en route back to base. 'There is not another military in the World that could have done this,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. "NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!" The president is scheduled to address the nation from the White House, framing the operation as a historic moment for the United States, Israel, and the world.
The strikes have heightened fears of a broader regional conflict. Iran's foreign minister had previously warned that direct U.S. involvement would be "very, very dangerous," and analysts now anticipate potential retaliation against U.S. personnel or assets in the region. The U.S. military has already heightened protective measures for its approximately 40,000 troops stationed in the area, maintaining a heightened alert status across most bases.
The attack shows the Trump administration's willingness to break with precedent in pursuit of its foreign policy objectives. Trump, who campaigned on promises to end foreign wars and avoid new military entanglements, ultimately chose to join Israel in a direct assault on Iran's nuclear program-a decision that reflects both his skepticism of Tehran's intentions and the influence of domestic and international allies.
As of Sunday morning, Iranian officials had not publicly responded to the attack. However, Iranian state media acknowledged that part of the Fordow site had been 'attacked by enemy strikes.' No casualties have been reported so far, but military analysts warn that Iranian retaliation is likely, and the situation remains highly volatile.
The Bottom Line
The U.S. airstrikes on Iran's nuclear sites represent a historic escalation in the Middle East conflict, signaling a new era of direct American military engagement in the region. The operation, carried out with advanced stealth technology and the world's most powerful conventional bombs, is intended to cripple Iran's nuclear capabilities-but it also risks drawing the U.S. deeper into a widening conflict with unpredictable consequences for global security and stability.
