Harvard Takes Action: Task Forces to Combat Campus Antisemitism and Islamophobia
In response to growing reports of antisemitism and Islamophobia, Harvard University establishes task forces to investigate and prevent incidents that threaten the sense of belonging among affected groups on campus.
Amidst the ongoing challenges in managing its campus response to the Israel-Hamas conflict, Harvard University has taken a significant step by announcing the formation of two task forces aimed at combating antisemitism and Islamophobia.

Addressing Concerns of Belonging and Safety
Harvard's interim president, Alan Garber, expressed concern over the rising reports of antisemitic and Islamophobic acts on campus, which have undermined the sense of belonging among these groups. Recognizing the need to understand the root causes of these issues, Garber emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent such incidents.
Resignation of Harvard President and Legal Challenges
The announcement of the task forces follows the resignation of Harvard president Claudine Gay, who faced backlash over her congressional testimony on antisemitism and allegations of plagiarism. Additionally, a group of Jewish students filed a lawsuit against Harvard, accusing the university of fostering an environment of anti-Jewish hatred and harassment.
Fallout of the Israel-Hamas Conflict on Campuses
The Israel-Hamas conflict has had a profound impact on campuses across the United States, reigniting debates over free speech and the line between political discourse and harassment. College leaders have faced difficulties in defining clear boundaries, with both Jewish and Arab students expressing concerns about the lack of protection from their respective institutions.
Congressional Hearing and Backlash
The issue gained national attention when the presidents of Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, and MIT testified at a congressional hearing on campus antisemitism. A Republican lawmaker's assertion that support for "intifada" equates to calling for the genocide of Jews sparked controversy, leading to the presidents' cautious responses and subsequent backlash from donors and alumni. This ultimately resulted in the resignations of Liz Magill at Penn and Claudine Gay at Harvard.
Goals and Composition of the Task Forces
The antisemitism task force, co-chaired by Derek Penslar and Raffaella Sadun, aims to investigate the reasons behind the rise in antisemitism at Harvard and propose recommendations to address it. Similarly, the task force on anti-Arab bias and Islamophobia, co-chaired by Wafaie Fawzi and Asim Ijaz Khwaja, will focus on understanding and countering these issues.
Seeking Engagement and Collaboration
Garber emphasized the importance of collective effort and engagement across the university to strengthen ties and foster a positive campus climate. He encouraged members of the Harvard community to share their perspectives and experiences with both care and candor, recognizing the opportunity to address challenges with far-reaching implications.
Rabbi David Wolpe's Perspective
Rabbi David Wolpe, who resigned from Harvard Divinity School's antisemitism committee following Claudine Gay's testimony, expressed hope that the new task force will be able to implement effective policies to change the campus climate. He plans to reach out to those involved in the task force to contribute his insights and support.
