From Zoo Newborn to Internet Star: Jellybean Pygmy Hippo Captures America’s Heart
Born on January 22 at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park, the pygmy hippo calf captured public attention after the zoo invited followers to help choose her name. When the results came in, "Jellybean" dominated the online poll with 81.3% of the vote, comfortably beating other candy-themed options such as Cadbury, Twixi and Taffy.
From Local Newborn to National Spotlight

The tiny hippo's rise didn't stop with the naming contest. On February 23, Zoo President Kristy Hayden introduced Jellybean to a national audience on Today. Calmly resting on Hayden's lap during the live segment, the young calf appeared unfazed by the bright lights and studio excitement - a moment that quickly circulated across social media platforms.
The television appearance significantly expanded Jellybean's fan base, turning a regional zoo birth into a nationwide talking point.
A Small Hippo with a Big Purpose
Behind the viral clips lies a serious message. Pygmy hippos are endangered, with experts estimating that only around 2,500 remain in the wild. Zoo officials say Jellybean's birth represents more than just a feel-good story; it is a valuable contribution to conservation efforts aimed at protecting a vulnerable species.
At birth, Jellybean weighed 11 pounds. Her most recent health check placed her at 33 pounds - still a fraction of the 350 to 600 pounds typical for adult pygmy hippos.
Stage Weight
Birth (January 22) 11 pounds
Recent check-up 33 pounds
Adult range 350-600 pounds

Comparisons to Another Viral Hippo
Online, some fans have drawn parallels between Jellybean and Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo born in 2024 at Khao Kheow Open Zoo. Moo Deng became a global sensation, inspiring merchandise and attracting crowds during Thailand's Songkran festivities.
Now, some social media users are calling Jellybean the "American Moo Deng," suggesting she could follow a similar path to internet fame.
Viral Fame Meets Conservation Awareness
From a landslide naming victory to a national TV debut, Jellybean's early weeks have been eventful. Zoo staff hope the excitement surrounding her gentle expressions and relaxed poses will do more than entertain - they want it to spark conversations about wildlife conservation.
