From Protest To Chaos: Nigeria's Struggle For Governance Amidst Growing Tensions
Christopher Musa, Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has urged to prevent the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest from spiralling into chaos. He emphasised that the military would not remain passive while destruction and looting occur.
During a press briefing with broadcast journalists, Musa praised the professionalism of Nigerian security forces, especially the police. He highlighted the difference between peaceful protests and criminal activities.

#EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Protest
The nationwide End Bad Governance protest began on Thursday. By the second day, over five people had died, and several others were injured. Authorities reported more than 1000 arrests for looting, vandalism, and other crimes since the protest started.
Musa noted that initially peaceful protests had been overshadowed by criminal elements aiming to cause chaos. "What we saw yesterday was, at the beginning, some semblance of a very peaceful demonstration, but which was quickly taken over by a bunch of criminals that don't mean us well," he said on Friday.
Government Efforts and National Unity
He urged Nigerians to be patient and support the federal government, which has been in power for only one year. The government is working to address various challenges, including economic and security issues.
Musa stressed national unity and collaboration, calling on all Nigerians to work together to restore peace and promote economic growth. He highlighted recent government efforts such as visits to the Niger Delta to boost oil production and secure more funds for the economy.
Security Forces' Stance
The CDS warned that security forces would not tolerate further destruction and looting. "The armed forces and the entire security agencies will not stand by and see our country destroyed. We will take action, and the action will be taken professionally," he stated.
Musa also addressed concerns about potential future protests. He assured citizens that the military is prepared to support the police if necessary.
Peaceful Expressions of Grievances
He urged Nigerians to avoid giving coverage to those seeking fame or profit from exploiting the situation. Musa reiterated the need for peaceful expressions of grievances.
Responding to questions about specific incidents, Musa acknowledged ongoing investigations into allegations of excessive force by security personnel. He assured the public that any misconduct would be addressed.
Call for Calm and Cooperation
Musa appealed to Nigerians to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and report any suspicious activities. He noted that the government is making every effort to ensure citizens' safety and security.
