RAF Flight Successfully Evacuates British Nationals from Israel Amid Escalating Conflict

A Royal Air Force flight evacuated 63 British citizens from Israel on Monday amid rising tensions in West Asia. The UK urged Iran to engage in negotiations following US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced that the flight departed from Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport, heading to Cyprus. From there, evacuees will take a civilian flight back to the UK.

In response to the escalating situation, the UK advised its nationals in Qatar to "shelter in place until further notice." This advice followed a US security alert and Qatar's decision to close its airspace due to Iran's threats of retaliatory strikes against American targets. Lammy emphasised the UK's commitment to securing more flights for British nationals.

UK Calls for Diplomacy Amidst Rising Tensions

Lammy stressed the importance of finding a negotiated solution, highlighting the risks of further escalation. He stated, "We can and we must find a negotiated solution. The window has narrowed, but the risks of further escalation are so great and the costs so considerable for Britain and all in the region, that this is the government’s priority."

The UK Foreign Secretary also delivered a clear message to Tehran, urging them to de-escalate tensions and engage in serious negotiations with the United States. He warned that failure to do so could lead to a more destructive conflict with unpredictable consequences.

UK Preparedness and Diplomatic Efforts

Following US air raids on Iranian nuclear facilities, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer clarified that the UK was not involved in these strikes on Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordo. In Parliament, Lammy assured that Britain is ready to defend its military assets in the region. He stated: "The situation presents serious risks to British interests in the region. Having moved in additional assets on a precautionary basis, force protection is at its highest levels."

Lammy also addressed questions from shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel regarding his recent summit with Iran and allies France, Germany, and the EU in Geneva. He acknowledged that Tehran did not return to negotiations during this meeting. Despite this setback, Lammy reiterated that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward.

The UK minister affirmed Britain's commitment to working with allies to protect its nationals and ensure regional stability. He emphasised that diplomatic efforts would continue as they seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
