Stubb Wins Finlands Presidential Election in Tight Race
Alexander Stubb emerged victorious in Finlands presidential election, narrowly defeating Pekka Haavisto. With over 99% of votes counted, Stubb, representing the conservative National Coalition Party, secured 51.6% of the votes, while Haavisto, an independent candidate, garnered 48.4%. Stubb, a former prime minister and ex-European Parliament lawmaker, is set to become Finlands 13th president since its independence from Russia in 1917.
In a closely contested presidential runoff election, former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb emerged victorious against former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto. The election, held on Sunday, February 12, saw Stubb secure 51.6% of the votes, while Haavisto received 48.4%. With over 99% of the votes counted, Stubb's victory marks a significant moment in Finnish politics.

Stubb's Background and Political Experience
Alexander Stubb, 55, is a seasoned politician who previously served as Finland's Prime Minister from 2014 to 2015. He began his political career as a lawmaker in the European Parliament. Stubb's extensive experience in various ministerial roles, including foreign affairs, finance, and European affairs, positioned him as a strong contender for the presidency.
Haavisto's Conceding Defeat and Voter Turnout
Following projections indicating Stubb's win by Finnish public broadcaster YLE, Pekka Haavisto graciously conceded defeat. The two candidates met at Helsinki City Hall, where they shook hands and congratulated each other as the results were announced. The voter turnout for the runoff election was recorded at 70.7%, slightly lower compared to the first round, which saw a turnout of 75%.
Stubb's Foreign Policy Priorities
During the election campaign, both Stubb and Haavisto largely shared similar views on Finland's foreign policy and security priorities. These priorities include maintaining a firm stance against Russia and its current leadership, strengthening security ties with the United States, and providing military and civilian assistance to Ukraine. Finland's shared border of 1,340 kilometers with Russia underscores the importance of these foreign policy considerations.
Finland's Presidential Powers
Unlike in many European countries, the Finnish president holds significant executive power in shaping foreign and security policy in collaboration with the government. This authority extends particularly to countries outside the European Union, such as the United States, Russia, and China. Additionally, the head of state serves as the commander-in-chief of the military, a crucial role in the current European security landscape and Finland's changed geopolitical situation following its accession to NATO in April 2023.
Haavisto's Diplomatic Experience
Pekka Haavisto, 65, served as Finland's top diplomat from 2019 to 2023 and played a pivotal role in negotiating the country's entry into NATO. Prior to his diplomatic career, Haavisto worked as a conflict mediator for the United Nations and is known for his strong environmental advocacy. This was his third attempt at the presidency, running as an independent candidate.
Alexander Stubb's victory in Finland's presidential election marks a significant transition in the country's leadership. With his extensive political experience and shared foreign policy priorities with his opponent, Stubb is poised to guide Finland through the challenges of the current geopolitical climate. As Finland navigates its new role as a NATO member and addresses its shared border with Russia, Stubb's leadership will be crucial in shaping the country's foreign and security policies.
