FBI Issues Caution for Spring Break Travelers as Sudiksha Konanki Remains Missing
As the mystery surrounding 20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki's disappearance from a beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, continues, the FBI's Los Angeles division has issued a cautionary travel advisory for spring break travelers. The Virginia native vanished while on vacation, with initial reports suggesting she drowned. However, her body has yet to be recovered.
Konanki's parents, grappling with the tragic uncertainty, have urged Dominican authorities to officially declare her deceased, allowing them to mourn and honor her memory.

In a statement, FBI Assistant Director in Charge Akil Davis warned travelers about security risks abroad. "Whether it's families escaping winter or college students seeking a break from academics, the risks are real," he said, advising vigilance and preparedness to contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if needed.
The Caribbean remains a region of concern, with Haiti under a Level 4 travel advisory ("do not travel") and Jamaica at Level 3 ("reconsider travel").
FBI's Spring Break Safety Tips:
Establish emergency contacts for your family.
Avoid traveling alone, especially at night.
Use only authorized taxis or shuttles to prevent robberies or kidnappings.
Stay aware of your surroundings and potential surveillance.
Avoid illegal activities and suspicious new acquaintances.
Was Foul Play Involved?
Initially, Konanki's parents suspected foul play, doubting she had drowned. Authorities questioned 24-year-old Joshua Riibe, the last person seen with her. Riibe claimed they were caught in strong waves, and after pulling Konanki from the rough waters, he lost consciousness on the shore. When he awoke, she was gone.
After cooperating with the investigation, Riibe was allowed to return home. Konanki's parents have since expressed gratitude for his assistance, believing he played no role in her disappearance.
