Fabio Ochoa, Notorious Drug Lord, Deported to Colombia After Serving 25 Years in US Prison
Fabio Ochoa, a notorious figure in Colombia's drug trade history, has been deported to Colombia after serving 25 years of a 30-year sentence in the U.S. He arrived at Bogota's El Dorado airport on Monday, dressed casually and carrying his belongings. Upon arrival, immigration officials met him, but no police presence suggested he might not face any pending charges in Colombia.

Colombia's national immigration agency stated that Ochoa should enter the country "without any problems" once cleared by immigration officers. These officers will verify if there are any outstanding cases against him. Ochoa, now 67, and his brothers gained immense wealth during the late 1970s and early 1980s when cocaine exports to the U.S. surged.
Medellin Cartel's Influence
Ochoa was a key player in the Medellin cartel, once led by Pablo Escobar. He managed a distribution hub in Miami for the cartel. Escobar died in a shootout with authorities in Medellin in 1993. In 1987, Forbes Magazine listed Ochoa and his brothers as billionaires due to their cocaine empire.
The U.S. first indicted Ochoa for his alleged involvement in the 1986 murder of Barry Seal, an American pilot who worked for the cartel but later became a DEA informant. In the early 1990s, Ochoa and his brothers surrendered to Colombian authorities under a deal that prevented their extradition to the U.S.
Legal Battles and Extradition
The three brothers were released from prison in 1996. However, Ochoa was arrested again three years later for drug trafficking. In 2001, he was extradited to the U.S., where he faced an indictment in Miami involving over 40 individuals in a drug smuggling conspiracy.
Ochoa was the only one among them who chose to go to trial, leading to his conviction and a 30-year sentence. The other defendants received lighter sentences as they cooperated with authorities. Despite his past notoriety, Ochoa's name has faded as Mexican cartels dominate today's drug trade.
Media Portrayals and Wealth
Ochoa recently appeared as a character in Netflix series like "Griselda" and "Narcos." In "Griselda," he initially competes with Griselda Blanco for Miami's cocaine market before forming an alliance with her character, played by Sofia Vergara. In "Narcos," he's depicted as part of an elite Medellin family.
Richard Gregorie, a retired assistant U.S. attorney involved in prosecuting Ochoa, noted that authorities never seized all of the family's illicit gains. Gregorie believes Ochoa will have a comfortable return home. "He won't be retiring a poor man, that's for sure," Gregorie told The Associated Press earlier this month.
