Don’t Mock India When They Are Down: Sri Lankan MP Supports New Delhi Amid Trump's Tariff Move

US President Donald Trump's recent decision to impose a steep 50% tariff on Indian goods has not only rattled trade circles but also prompted strong reactions from Sri Lanka's political leadership. Among the voices backing India is Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva, who spoke passionately in Parliament, recalling New Delhi's timely assistance during his country's worst-ever economic crisis.

The MP said, "Don't laugh at India. Don't mock them when they are down because when we were down, they were the only ones to lend us a hand. It ain't over until the fat lady sings. We witnessed you laughing. Don't laugh. India expected the tariffs to come down to 15%, and so did we."

U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, prompting Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva to support India, recalling their aid during Sri Lanka's economic crisis and condemning the tariff due to India's oil trade with Moscow and refusal to open its agriculture sector. India responded by stating these tariffs were unfair and unjustified.
Don t Mock India When They Are Down Sri Lankan MP Supports New Delhi Amid Trump s Tariff Move

Sharing a video of his speech on X, he wrote, "Called out the government in Sri Lankan Parliament for mocking India's bold stand against Trump's trade tariffs. India, our true ally, stood by us in our toughest times. We should honour their fight, not laugh. India's courage inspires Asia!"

The tariff hike comes in two phases: an initial additional 25% duty imposed on August 6, followed by another 25% scheduled for August 27, effectively doubling the levy to 50%. Trump cited New Delhi's oil trade with Moscow as the trigger for this move.

While China remains the largest buyer of Russian oil, the US has been notably cautious in dealing with Beijing. Reports suggest Trump's latest tariff escalation is also linked to India's refusal to open its agriculture sector to American goods - a demand New Delhi has resisted. The Modi government has made it clear it will not yield to what it sees as bullying tactics from Washington.

India's response

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a firm statement: "The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India."

It further stressed, "It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest... We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests."
