Governor Ron DeSantis to Appoint Marco Rubio's Senate Replacement by Early January
Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida announced that the state might know its next US senator by early January. This follows the nomination of Senator Marco Rubio as President-elect Donald Trump's secretary of state. If Rubio is confirmed by the Senate, DeSantis will appoint his successor, as per the US Constitution and state law.

DeSantis has begun gathering names and conducting initial vetting for potential candidates. He shared on social media that he received strong interest from several individuals. In the coming weeks, he plans to conduct more thorough vetting and interviews with candidates.
Potential Candidates for Senate Seat
Some Republicans in Florida are urging DeSantis to consider Lara Trump for the position. Florida Senator Rick Scott expressed his support for her on social media. Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, serves as a co-chair of the Republican National Committee and resides in Palm Beach County.
In a recent Fox News interview, Lara Trump stated, "If I am tapped to serve in another capacity, it truly would be my honour." She added that she has not been approached yet but would seriously consider it if offered.
Governor's Criteria for Selection
DeSantis outlined his criteria for the new senator on X, stating that Florida needs someone who will support President Trump's agenda. The ideal candidate should focus on immigration and border security, challenge bureaucratic systems, address fiscal issues, uphold conservative values, and have a proven track record.
The governor's decision could also strengthen ties with Trump's administration. Some political analysts suggest that appointing a family member of the president-elect could help DeSantis gain favour with Trump's supporters as he considers his own political future.
Other Names Under Consideration
Besides Lara Trump, other potential candidates include Lt Gov Jeanette Nunez, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and former House Speaker Paul Renner. Each brings unique qualifications to the table.
If Rubio is confirmed as secretary of state, his replacement will serve until 2026 when the seat will be contested in the next regular election cycle.
This appointment gives DeSantis an opportunity to influence Florida's representation in Washington while aligning with national Republican priorities.
