Dark MAGA Emerges as Conservatives Embrace Elon Musk's Growing Influence on Trump
At a recent conservative gathering, the iconic red "Make America Great Again" hats were seen alongside black "Dark MAGA" hats, linked to Elon Musk. This highlighted Musk's growing influence in conservative circles. Once a supporter of Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden, Musk has now become a significant figure due to his ties with Donald Trump.

Musk's unexpected appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) was announced just hours before he took the stage with a chainsaw. His presence and remarks underscored his influence, especially after the Trump administration claimed in court that Musk wasn't leading the Department of Government Efficiency. CPAC speakers frequently mentioned DOGE, a meme coin popularised by Musk in 2021.
Elon Musk's Influence on Government
House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Musk's efforts, stating, "What Elon and the team are doing is what Congress has not had the ability to do." He emphasised that Musk's team had penetrated the bureaucracy's core. Under Musk's guidance, the Trump administration dismissed thousands of federal employees without notice, offering them resignation options and reducing agency sizes without congressional consent.
Musk, who acquired Twitter in 2022, has committed to identifying cost-cutting measures to save taxpayer money. His directives have caused confusion and protests across various agencies. During Trump's CPAC speech, Musk announced that federal workers would receive emails asking them to detail their weekly accomplishments. Failure to respond would be considered a resignation.
Concerns Over Musk's Growing Power
Trump expressed admiration for Musk during his speech, saying, "Elon is doing a great job. We love Elon, don't we? He's a character." Critics argue that Musk might benefit from his close relationship with Trump as federal investigations and safety programmes could impact Tesla's plans for robo-taxis and self-driving cars. SpaceX also holds significant contracts with the Pentagon, NASA, and intelligence agencies.
Colin McEvers, a 19-year-old Trump supporter and political science student at Salisbury University, voiced concerns about Musk's increasing power in government. He said he appreciated efforts to make government more efficient but worried about potential self-interest from the world's richest man reducing regulations that might benefit his businesses.
Criticism from MAGA Figures
Musk's stance on issues like H-1B visas for skilled immigrant workers has drawn criticism from MAGA figures like Steve Bannon. Bannon once labelled Musk as a "parasitic illegal immigrant" and an "oligarch" who would abandon Trump when no longer useful. However, at CPAC, Bannon refrained from criticising Musk and instead faced backlash for making a gesture compared to a Nazi salute. Bannon claimed it was just a wave.
Meanwhile, at the Principles First Summit near the White House, anti-Trump activists laughed as billionaire Mark Cuban accused Trump of "overselling" and criticised Musk's actions as unhelpful to Republican voters. Cuban used strong language to suggest Musk was complicating his role.
Trump later posted on Truth Social expressing his desire for Musk to be more aggressive. During his speech, Trump dismissed concerns about Musk not having an official government role despite his influence on decisions during Trump's first month in office. He stated, "People said well, what official position does he have? I say patriot."
The evolving dynamics between Elon Musk and political figures continue to draw attention as they navigate their roles within government and business sectors.
