Cyclone Hidaya Weakens but Still Poses Threat to Tanzania's Coast
Cyclone Hidaya, which had been moving towards Tanzania's coastline, has significantly weakened, according to the country's meteorology department. Despite the reduction in intensity, officials are urging residents to remain vigilant as the cyclone is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds across the nation until Sunday. The exact decrease in the cyclone's maximum wind speeds was not disclosed by the meteorological authorities.

In the wake of Cyclone Hidaya's approach, Tanzania experienced a major blackout affecting most parts of the country on Saturday. This was attributed to the severe weather conditions, including heavy rains and strong winds, exacerbating the situation in a region already suffering from weeks of flooding. The adverse weather conditions prompted the suspension of ferry services between Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's commercial hub, and Zanzibar. Prior to its weakening, Hidaya had been advancing with maximum winds reaching 120 kph (33 mph) accompanied by powerful gusts.
Local media reported incidents of trees being uprooted on Mafia Island due to the cyclone's strong winds by Saturday afternoon. The meteorology department had previously cautioned residents about the increasing intensity of the cyclone. Additionally, coastal areas recorded higher than usual rainfall overnight, as noted by the weather service. In response to these developments, the Tanzania Red Cross Society has been actively conducting preparedness campaigns along the coast.
The recent heavy rains and flooding have had a devastating impact on Tanzania and other parts of East Africa. According to authorities, these conditions have resulted in the deaths of approximately 155 individuals. Furthermore, over 200,000 people have been affected by these severe weather events.
