Crime Knows No Friends Or Foes: Ambassador Garcetti Amid US Charging Ex-Raw Official In Pannun Murder Plot
In a conversation with TOI, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti discussed the case of Vikash Yadav, a former Indian official accused of a murder-for-hire plot. Garcetti stressed the importance of accountability and justice in this matter. He expressed satisfaction with India's investigation but insisted on accountability for the crime. Garcetti emphasized that criminal acts are unacceptable, regardless of their origin.
Garcetti refrained from commenting on whether the US would pursue Yadav's extradition. However, he reiterated the necessity for accountability in such cases. The ambassador also addressed concerns about Khalistan separatists and their threats from the US and Canada. He highlighted strong counterterrorism cooperation between India and the US.

Focus on Counterterrorism Cooperation
Garcetti cited the extradition case against Tahawwur Rana, an accused in the Mumbai attacks, as an example of effective collaboration between India and the US. He emphasized that both countries take real threats seriously and are committed to holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
The ambassador expressed optimism about resolving issues while maintaining a strong relationship between India and the US. Despite complexities surrounding Yadav's case, he praised ongoing collaboration and dialogue between the two nations. Garcetti highlighted the importance of getting this case right due to its impact on bilateral relations.
Judicial Independence and Bilateral Relations
Garcetti touched upon the independence of the US judicial system, noting that prosecutors make decisions based on evidence without political influence. Regarding diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, he described both as close friends and partners of the US. He expressed hope for resolution and understanding between these countries.
The ambassador stressed justice and cooperation in criminal justice matters, even during challenging times. He underscored that maintaining strong ties with India is crucial despite any complexities arising from such cases.
The dialogue between India and the US remains robust, with both nations committed to addressing issues collaboratively. Garcetti's remarks reflect a dedication to ensuring justice while preserving important international relationships.
