In a recent development, the mother of the infamous drug lord Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, María Consuelo Loera Pérez, has passed away in the northern state of Sinaloa, Mexico. The news was confirmed by a federal official who spoke on condition of anonymity. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged her passing and expressed his condolences to the family.

Respect for the Deceased

Despite facing criticism for his frequent visits to the drug lord's hometown of Badiraguato, Sinaloa, President López Obrador emphasized that every human being who passes away deserves respect and consideration for their family. Local media reported that Loera passed away at a private hospital in Culiacán, Sinaloa, the home base of the Sinaloa cartel, which her son led for approximately two decades before his arrest and extradition to the United States in 2017.

A Quiet Life and a Moment in the Spotlight

Loera reportedly lived a relatively quiet life, actively engaging in religious activities. However, she gained public attention when she shook hands with President López Obrador during an impromptu meeting in Badiraguato in 2020. Additionally, in 2019, she successfully sought the president's support in obtaining a visa to visit her son, who is currently serving a life sentence in the United States.

A Mother's Plea

In a letter written in March 2020, Loera, then 92 years old, expressed her desire for her son to be returned to Mexico to serve out his sentence. President López Obrador has generally refrained from criticizing Mexico's drug lords and their families, suggesting that they may have been driven to engage in antisocial activities due to a lack of opportunities. However, he has maintained that they deserve consideration and respect.

The Sinaloa Cartel and Its Notorious Leader

Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán led the Sinaloa cartel, engaging in violent drug turf battles that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Mexicans. He gained notoriety for his audacious escapes from Mexican prisons, including one instance where he fled through a mile-long tunnel from his cell. After his extradition to New York, his trial revealed shocking details of gruesome killings, political corruption, and elaborate drug smuggling operations. Ultimately, he was convicted of running an industrial-scale smuggling operation and is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado.

Recent Developments

Earlier this year, Mexico extradited one of Guzmán's sons, Ovidio Guzmán López, to the United States to face charges related to drug trafficking, money laundering, and other offenses. Ovidio is believed to have played a significant role in the Sinaloa cartel's production and exportation of fentanyl to the United States, a drug linked to approximately 70,000 overdose deaths annually.

The passing of María Consuelo Loera Pérez marks the end of an era for the Sinaloa cartel and its infamous leader. While her son's actions have had devastating consequences, her death serves as a reminder of the human toll associated with the drug trade and the complex realities faced by families caught in its web.
