Deadly Avalanche Hits California Ski Resort, Leaving One Dead
An avalanche at a California ski resort near Lake Tahoe tragically claimed the life of one person and injured another. The incident occurred on expert trails during a major storm that brought snow and gusty winds to the region.
A catastrophic avalanche swept through a section of expert trails at Palisades Tahoe, a renowned ski resort near Lake Tahoe, California, resulting in the tragic loss of one life and leaving another person injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 11, as a significant storm brought heavy snowfall and gusty winds to the region.

Search and Rescue Efforts
Following the avalanche, Palisades Tahoe promptly closed its operations just 30 minutes after opening. Search and rescue teams were swiftly deployed to thoroughly comb the affected area, meticulously searching for any individuals who may have been injured or trapped beneath the snow.
Confirmation of Fatality
Hours after the avalanche, Sgt. David Smith, a spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff's Office, confirmed the unfortunate news. Tragically, one person, a male skier, succumbed to the avalanche's force, while another individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Thankfully, no additional individuals were reported missing.
Avalanche Details
The avalanche struck at approximately 9:30 a.m. on steep slopes situated beneath the KT-22 lift, a section of the resort designated for "black diamond" runs, catering to highly skilled skiers and snowboarders. Palisades Tahoe issued a statement via X, formerly Twitter, announcing the closure of both sides of the mountain for the remainder of the day.
Extent of Avalanche Debris
The avalanche left behind a substantial debris field, spanning an impressive 150 feet (45.72 meters) in width, 450 feet (137.16 meters) in length, and reaching a depth of 10 feet (3.05 meters). The Placer County Sheriff's Office expressed their deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased during this difficult time.
Impact of Powerful Storm
The avalanche occurred amidst a powerful winter storm that was forecasted to bring significant snowfall to the region. By early Thursday, the highest elevations were expected to receive up to 2 feet (61 centimeters) of fresh snow.
Palisades Tahoe: A Renowned Ski Destination
Palisades Tahoe, formerly known as Squaw Valley, holds a prominent place in skiing history as the host of the 1960 Winter Olympics. Situated on the western shore of Lake Tahoe, approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) from Reno, Nevada, the resort attracts skiers and snowboarders from around the world.
Recent Avalanche Incidents
The tragic incident at Palisades Tahoe is not the first avalanche-related accident to occur in the area. In 2020, an avalanche at Alpine Meadows, a neighboring resort, claimed the life of one skier and left another severely injured. A more devastating avalanche in March 1982 at the same resort resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including several employees of the ski resort.
The avalanche at Palisades Tahoe serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with winter sports. As skiers and snowboarders venture into the mountains, it is crucial to prioritize safety, heed weather warnings, and exercise caution in challenging terrain. The loss of life in this tragic incident underscores the importance of respecting the power of nature and taking necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable skiing experience.
