Rebel Attack in Burundi Claims Lives, Including Children and Pregnant Women
A rebel group from the Democratic Republic of Congo carried out an attack in Burundi, leading to the deaths of at least 20 individuals, including 12 children and three pregnant women. The assault targeted nine homes in the western town of Vugizo, near the border with Congo.
In a tragic turn of events, Burundi has fallen victim to a devastating rebel attack, resulting in the loss of at least 20 innocent lives. The assault, carried out by a rebel group based in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, has left the nation in mourning.

Attack Targets Homes in Vugizo
The rebel group, known as RED-Tabara, launched a coordinated attack on nine homes in the western town of Vugizo on Friday evening. The town, situated near the Lake Tanganyika border with Congo, became the scene of unimaginable horror as the rebels unleashed their violence.
Children and Women Among the Victims
The attack displayed a callous disregard for human life, with 12 children and three women, two of whom were pregnant, falling victim to the rebels' brutality. Burundian government spokesman Jérôme Niyonzima confirmed the tragic toll in a statement, highlighting the immense suffering inflicted upon innocent civilians.
RED-Tabara Claims Responsibility
RED-Tabara, a Burundian armed rebel group based in South Kivu, eastern Congo, has claimed responsibility for the heinous attack. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the group attempted to justify their actions by denying any intention to target civilians. However, their claim of killing nine soldiers and a police officer only underscores the gravity of their crimes.
Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Witnesses who spoke to The Associated Press painted a harrowing picture of the events that unfolded during the attack. They reported seeing rebels clad in Burundian army uniforms, while the military and police inexplicably fled the scene, leaving civilians defenseless. The chaos resulted in numerous individuals sustaining bullet injuries as they desperately sought safety.
President Calls for Vigilance
In the wake of this devastating attack, Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has issued a stern warning to army, police, and intelligence officers. He emphasized the need for constant vigilance, stressing that "the enemy never sleeps even if we have security."
Burundi's Secret Deployment in Congo
The Burundi Human Rights Initiative has revealed that Burundi secretly deployed hundreds of troops and militia to Congo in 2021, with the aim of combating RED-Tabara. The impact of this covert operation remains unclear, adding another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation.
The rebel attack in Burundi has left the nation reeling from the loss of innocent lives. As the country grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, questions linger about the effectiveness of security measures and the role of external actors in fueling the conflict. The international community must come together to support Burundi in its efforts to restore peace and stability, ensuring that such senseless violence becomes a thing of the past.
