Biden Backs Israel's Targeted Strike on Hezbollah's Nasrallah: 'Justice Served For Terror Victims'
US President Joe Biden described the Israeli airstrike that killed Hassan Nasrallah, a Hezbollah leader, as a "measure of justice for victims of a four-decade reign of terror." This statement followed Hezbollah's confirmation that Nasrallah died in an Israeli attack in Beirut. The incident is part of a larger conflict that began with Hamas' assault on Israelis on 7 October 2023.

Biden highlighted that Nasrallah's decision to ally with Hamas and open a northern front against Israel was significant. He also pointed out that under Nasrallah's leadership, Hezbollah was responsible for numerous deaths, including Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese. The group's attacks on US interests include the 1983 truck bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut and the kidnapping of a CIA chief.
Impact on Regional Stability
The White House views Nasrallah's death as a major setback for Hezbollah. However, the administration is cautious to prevent Israel's conflict with Hamas from escalating into a wider regional war. Vice President Kamala Harris echoed Biden's sentiment, stating, "Diplomacy remains the best path forward to protect civilians and achieve lasting stability in the region."
Following the strike, both the White House and Pentagon clarified that Israel did not provide prior notice of the operation. Biden reiterated his desire for ceasefires in Gaza and between Israel and Hezbollah, emphasizing the need for stability in the Middle East.
International Reactions
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the US of supporting Nasrallah's killing, claiming it was ordered from New York. He stated on Iranian state television that "the world community will not forget" America's involvement with Zionists. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue operations against Hezbollah until displaced Israelis can return home.
The State Department has advised American citizens to leave Lebanon due to increased volatility following airstrikes in Beirut. It ordered nonessential embassy staff and diplomats' families to depart because of the unpredictable security situation. The department has consistently warned against travel to Lebanon.
US Military Adjustments
Biden directed the Pentagon to review and adjust US military presence in the region to enhance deterrence and support US objectives. This directive came after additional US troops were deployed due to rising tensions. The State Department routinely orders departures when security conditions worsen but clarified this is not an evacuation.
The confirmation of Nasrallah's death coincided with efforts by Biden's national security aides at the UN General Assembly to secure support for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. They hoped this would also aid stalled truce efforts in Gaza.
