Swift Military Operation Leads to Arrests of Former Separatist Leaders in Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh Region
Following a rapid military operation last month, Azerbaijani authorities have arrested several former separatist leaders from the Armenian-populated region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The move has triggered an exodus of over 1,00,000 ethnic Armenians who fear reprisals after three decades under separatist rule.
The recent arrest of several former separatist leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijani authorities marks a significant development in the region's history. This move comes on the heels of Azerbaijan reclaiming control over this Armenian-populated breakaway region, following a swift military operation last month, as reported by one of Azerbaijan's leading news agencies.
Arrests Signal Swift Consolidation

Among those arrested include Arayik Harutyunyan who led the region before his resignation at the beginning of September. He is now being transported to Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. Arkadi Gukasian and Bako Sahakyan, both former presidents serving from 1997-2007 and 2007-2020 respectively were also detained along with Davit Ishkhanyan, speaker of the separatist legislature.
A Wave of Arrests Amidst Exodus
This wave of arrests signals Azerbaijani authorities' rapid efforts to establish their dominion over Nagorno-Karabakh after an aggressive offensive that resulted in an exodus exceeding 1,00,000 people. This constitutes more than 80 per cent of its ethnic Armenian residents fleeing their homes due to fear and uncertainty.
Fears Among Ethnic Armenians
Despite assurances from Azerbaijan about respecting the rights and freedoms of ethnic Armenians residing in Nagorno-Karabakh, most have chosen to escape fearing possible reprisals after three decades under separatist rule. The sudden shift in power has brought about a sense of trepidation among them as they grapple with what lies ahead.
Military Offensive Results in Capitulation
In a decisive campaign lasting just 24 hours commencing on September 19th, Azerbaijani armed forces managed to overpower the region's undermanned and outgunned Armenian forces, compelling them to surrender. This marked a significant turn of events in the history of this contested region.
In conclusion, the recent arrests of former separatist leaders signify Azerbaijan's swift consolidation of power over Nagorno-Karabakh following their successful military operation. However, this has resulted in a mass exodus and fear among ethnic Armenians who have lived under separatist rule for three decades. The situation remains tense as authorities navigate through these complex dynamics while ensuring stability and peace in the region.
