Blinken urges Israel to protect civilians, allow aid in Gaza

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel and Gaza, urging Israel to take steps to protect civilians, allow more aid into Gaza, and work with moderate Palestinian leaders. He emphasized the importance of a pathway to a Palestinian state and rejected proposals for settling Palestinians outside the territory.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel on Tuesday, urging the country to take more significant steps to safeguard civilians, facilitate aid delivery to Gaza, and collaborate with moderate Palestinian leaders. He emphasized that regional nations would only invest in Gaza's reconstruction if there was a clear path toward establishing a Palestinian state.

Blinkens Gaza visit: A push for protection, aid, and peace

Blinken's Demands and Concerns

Blinken made it clear that Palestinians must be allowed to return to their homes as soon as conditions permit and rejected any proposals to resettle them outside the territory. He dismissed a genocide lawsuit filed against Israel by South Africa at the International Court of Justice, labeling the allegations as "meritless" and distracting from efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Ongoing Offensive in Gaza

Despite Blinken's visit, the Israeli military continued its offensive in Gaza, engaging in heavy bombardment and fighting that forced Palestinians to seek safety and hindered aid organizations' efforts to provide relief to the population.

Promises of Reconstruction Aid

Blinken secured promises from four Arab nations and Turkey to assist in rebuilding Gaza after the war. However, these nations also seek an end to the fighting and concrete steps toward creating a Palestinian state alongside Israel, a goal that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently opposed.

Disagreements over Gaza's Governance

The United States and Israel remain deeply divided on how Gaza will be governed if and when Hamas is defeated. American officials advocate for the Palestinian Authority, which currently governs parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, to assume control of Gaza. Israeli leaders reject this idea without proposing a concrete alternative beyond maintaining open-ended military control over the territory.

Blinken's Criticism of Israeli Actions

Blinken criticized Israel's actions that undermine the Palestinians' ability to govern themselves effectively. He emphasized the need for Israel to partner with Palestinian leaders willing to lead their people and coexist peacefully with Israel. He also highlighted that settler violence, settlement expansion, home demolitions, and evictions hinder Israel's efforts to achieve lasting peace and security.

Preventing an All-Out War with Hezbollah

In addition to addressing the situation in Gaza, Blinken aimed to prevent a full-scale war between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah. Following an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed Hamas's deputy leader, tensions between the two sides escalated.

Hezbollah's Drone Strike

On Tuesday, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for drone strikes targeting the Israeli army's northern command in the town of Safed, marking a deeper penetration into Israel than previous attacks. The Israeli military reported that a drone fell at a base in the north without causing damage, suggesting successful interception.

US Pressure on Israel

The United States has urged Israel to scale down its offensive in Gaza and adopt more precise operations targeting Hamas. However, the pace of death and destruction remains high, with hundreds of Palestinians killed daily, according to health officials in Gaza.

Israel's Vow to Continue Fighting

Israel remains committed to its goal of eliminating Hamas throughout Gaza in response to attacks that killed approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in southern Israel and led to the kidnapping of around 250 others.

Hamas's Continued Resistance

Despite three months of fighting, Hamas continues to put up a fierce fight. The Israeli military claims to have dismantled Hamas infrastructure in northern Gaza, but clashes persist against pockets of militants. The offensive's focus has shifted to the southern city of Khan Younis and urban refugee camps in central Gaza.

Devastating Impact on Gaza

The Israeli assault in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 23,200 Palestinians, approximately 1% of the territory's population. More than 58,000 people have been wounded, with two-thirds of the fatalities being women and children. The death toll does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.

Ongoing Fighting and Humanitarian Crisis

Throughout the night and into Tuesday morning, Israeli warplanes struck multiple areas in and around Khan Younis and central Gaza, leading to dozens of casualties. The fighting has severely hampered aid deliveries, with several warehouses, distribution centers, health facilities, and shelters affected by the military's evacuation orders.

Escalating Tensions with Hezbollah

As Blinken arrived in Israel, exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah continued to escalate following the killing of Hamas's deputy leader in Beirut. Hezbollah claimed its drone strike on the Israeli base was retaliation for the deaths of Arouri and a senior Hezbollah commander in an Israeli bombing.

Blinken's Difficult Discussions

US officials anticipate that Blinken's discussions with Netanyahu and other Israeli officials will be challenging, marking some of the most difficult conversations during his current Middle East tour.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with widespread destruction, civilian casualties, and severe restrictions on aid delivery. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to Israel aimed to address these issues, calling for greater protection of civilians, increased aid access, and progress toward establishing a Palestinian state. However, significant challenges remain, including disagreements over Gaza's governance and the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
