American Airlines Flight from New York to Delhi Diverted to Rome Due to Security Concern
An American Airlines flight travelling from New York to New Delhi was diverted to Rome due to a "possible security concern." The aircraft has been inspected and cleared by law enforcement for departure, according to the airline's statement. It is scheduled to leave for its destination as soon as possible on the following day.

The flight, identified as American Airlines 292, initially departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport on February 22. It was supposed to land in Delhi but was redirected to Rome after a security issue was reported by the crew. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the plane landed safely at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport around 5:30 p.m. local time on February 23.
Security Protocols and Inspection
Upon landing in Rome, law enforcement conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft. "American Airlines flight 292, with service from New York JFK to Delhi DEL, diverted to Rome FCO due to a possible security concern. The flight landed safely at FCO, and law enforcement inspected and cleared the aircraft to re-depart," stated American Airlines.
The airline further explained that although the potential threat was deemed non-credible, an inspection was necessary under DEL Airport protocol before the plane could land in Delhi. This precautionary measure ensured compliance with safety regulations.
Passenger Safety and Apology
American Airlines emphasised that passenger safety and security are their utmost priorities. They expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to their customers due to this unexpected diversion. The airline assured passengers that all necessary steps were taken to ensure their well-being.
The aircraft will remain at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport overnight. This pause allows the crew to rest before resuming their journey to New Delhi as soon as possible on the next day.
Escorted Landing
Social media visuals depicted the Boeing 787-9 being escorted by the Italian Air Force prior to its landing in Rome. This escort was part of standard procedures during such situations, ensuring a safe arrival at the airport.
The incident highlights the importance of adhering to security protocols in aviation. By following these measures, airlines can maintain high safety standards while addressing any potential threats effectively.
