Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove Visits Chicago to Observe Immigration Enforcement Operations
Emil Bove, the Acting Deputy Attorney General, visited Chicago on Sunday to observe immigration enforcement operations. These operations have been highlighted by President Donald Trump. However, no specific details about these operations, such as locations or arrest numbers, were disclosed on Sunday.

Chicago residents, particularly within immigrant communities, have been anxious for months due to the anticipated large-scale immigration arrests promised by the Trump administration. In response, immigrant rights groups have launched campaigns to educate immigrants about their rights in case of an arrest. City officials have also distributed similar information at numerous public transit stations.
Immigration Enforcement Operations
Bove was in Chicago to observe Department of Homeland Security's immigration enforcement efforts and support federal agencies like the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives. This information was shared by Chad Gilmartin, a spokesperson for the US Department of Justice. Attempts to reach officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ATF, and FBI for comments were unsuccessful.
On Friday, Chicago Public Schools mistakenly believed that ICE agents had visited a city elementary school. They issued statements before realising that the agents were from the Secret Service. The presence of immigration agents at schools has been a contentious issue since Trump ended a policy that kept them off-limits last week. This incident drew criticism from community groups and Governor JB Pritzker.
Community Reactions and Legal Actions
Governor Pritzker, a frequent critic of Trump, questioned the operations targeting immigrants. "We need to get rid of the violent criminals. But we also need to protect people, at least the residents of Illinois and all across the nation, who are just doing what we hope that immigrants will do," he stated on CNN's State of the Union.
Chicago has been a frequent target for Trump due to its strong sanctuary protections that prevent city police from cooperating with immigration agents. On Saturday, several immigrant rights groups filed a lawsuit against ICE seeking an injunction to stop certain types of immigration raids in Chicago.
"Immigrant communities who have called Chicago their home for decades are scared," said Antonio Gutierrez from Organised Communities Against Deportation, one of the plaintiffs. "We refuse to live in fear and will fight any attempts to roll back the work we've done to keep families together."
