Zakir Hussain's Sister to Private News Outlet: ‘Tabla Maestro Alive, But Critical’

Rumours about the death of tabla maestro Zakir Hussain circulated widely on social media and news channels. However, his sister, Khurshid Aulia, confirmed to mid-day that these reports are false. She stated that while Hussain is in a critical condition, he remains alive. The 73-year-old musician is currently in a San Francisco hospital due to heart-related issues.

Hussain's manager, Nirmala Bachani, mentioned that he has been dealing with blood pressure problems and has been hospitalised for two weeks. His friend, flautist Rakesh Chaurasia, also confirmed his admission to the ICU. "He is unwell and admitted in the ICU right now. We all are worried about the situation," Chaurasia told PTI.

Family Requests Prayers for Zakir Hussain

Khurshid Aulia urged people to pray for her brother during this challenging time. She emphasised his global significance as a musician and genius. "The news of his passing away is false. He is very much alive, but he is in very, very critical condition," she said.

Aulia also shared that if any changes occur in Hussain's condition or if he passes away, his wife will release a statement. Until then, they prefer not to comment further on his health status.

Zakir Hussain has followed in the footsteps of his father, legendary tabla player Allah Rakha. He has become a prominent figure both in India and internationally by bringing the tabla to a global audience.

His contributions have made him a marquee name worldwide. Despite his current health challenges, his influence on music remains significant and enduring.

The family continues to hope for positive developments regarding his health while requesting privacy during this difficult period.
