Zakir Hussain Faces Critical Health Challenges in San Francisco ICU Due to Heart Issues
Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain is currently in the ICU at a San Francisco hospital due to heart-related issues, as confirmed by his family and friends. The 73-year-old musician, who has significantly popularised the tabla worldwide, has been experiencing blood pressure problems, according to his manager Nirmala Bachani. Hussain has been hospitalised for heart concerns over the past two weeks.

Family and Friends Seek Prayers
Amidst false reports of his passing, Hussain's sister Khursheed clarified that he is critically ill but still alive. "My brother is deeply ill at this time. We are asking all his fans around India and around the world to pray for him, to pray for his health. But as India's greatest ever exports, do not finish him off just yet," she stated. She urged media outlets not to spread incorrect information about his condition.
Hussain's publicist also confirmed that the percussionist remains under treatment and has not passed away. Earlier, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting mistakenly announced his death on X but later retracted the post. His friend and flautist Rakesh Chaurasia expressed concern over Hussain's health, stating that he is currently in the ICU.
Legacy and Achievements
Zakir Hussain, son of legendary tabla player Allah Rakha, has carved a niche for himself both in India and internationally. He has won five Grammy Awards throughout his career, including three at the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year. His collaboration in 1973 with English guitarist John McLaughlin and others introduced a unique fusion of Indian classical music with jazz elements.
As concerns about Hussain's health grow, senior journalist Pervaiz Alam shared updates on X, citing information from Hussain's brother-in-law Ayub Aulia. "Ustad Zakir Hussain, Tabla player, percussionist, composer, former actor and the son of legendary Tabla player, Ustad Allah Rakha is not well. He's being treated for serious ailments in a San Francisco hospital, USA," Aulia informed.
Hussain's illustrious career has earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2023. His contributions have made him one of India's most celebrated classical musicians.
