India Vs X! Is X Putting India’s News Freedom Under Question? | Analysis

There is a new feud going on between micro-blogging site X and New Delhi. India has always upheld the values of a free and vibrant press. on July 3rd, 2025, Elon Musk-owned platform X-formerly Twitter-accused the Indian government of ordering the blocking of over 2,300 accounts, including those of international news agencies like Reuters and ReutersWorld.

X formerly known as Twitter

X claimed that these actions were taken under Section 69A of the IT Act. However, the Government of India promptly and categorically denied these allegations, calling them false and misleading.

In fact, the Ministry of Electronics and IT revealed it had no intention of blocking Reuters. As soon as the handles went dark in India, the government sent urgent communications to X, demanding their restoration.

Yet, X delayed action for more than 21 hours, even after hourly follow-ups by Indian authorities. Why did it take so long? Why did X allow the situation to escalate?

This incident raises a pressing question - is X trying to paint India in a poor light on global media freedom? Is it part of a larger agenda? Let's not forget, this is not the first time that X has clashed with national governments.

X's post encourages affected users to seek legal remedies. But ironically, India never initiated any legal block on Reuters, making this suggestion completely unnecessary.

India continues to host a diverse and critical media ecosystem, including global agencies like Reuters, BBC, Al Jazeera and many more. The freedom of press in India is alive and well, despite what X would have the world believe.
