Will Creta & Kia Price Drop After GST Rate Cut? Check Length & Engine CC Details Of Top Cars

As India's GST overhaul (GST 2.0) takes effect from 22 September, cars up to 4 metres in length and with petrol engines ≤ 1,200 cc (or diesel ≤ 1,500 cc) now attract an 18% GST, down from around 29% (28% GST + cess), paving the way for savings of ₹35,000 to ₹1.3 lakh.

Top Sub-4 Metre Models (≤ 1,200 cc)

These popular Indian models all fall under the lower GST bracket, offering immediate relief to buyers:

These models are expected to become significantly cheaper, with price drops ranging typically from ₹35,000 to ₹1.1 lakh for premium hatchbacks and up to ₹1.3 lakh for compact SUVs.

Hyundai Creta: Neither Compact Nor Benefit

In contrast, the Hyundai Creta, a highly popular SUV, does not qualify for the reduced GST bracket.

• Length: 4,330 mm-well above the 4-metre threshold
• Engine Options: All powertrains exceed 1,200 cc. These include:
• 1.5 L petrol (1,497 cc)
• 1.5 L diesel (1,493 cc)
• 1.4 L turbo petrol (1,353 cc)

Even a 1.0 L turbo variant exists, but the Creta versions offered in India exceed 1,200 cc.

As a result, the Creta falls under the higher 40% GST slab for larger vehicles, down from a previous effective rate of around 45-50% (inclusive of cess). But there is some relief: It is still expected to witness a price reduction-though modest-thanks to the removal of the compensation cess and aligning under the simplified 40% rate

While small hatchbacks and sub-4-metre SUVs with engines under 1,200 cc stand to gain considerable savings under the revised GST framework, the Hyundai Creta, though it will see a reduction, remains outside that sweet spot due to its larger size and higher engine specifications.
