Why Are Signal Failures Dropping? Discover Central Railway’s Secret Solution
In a significant improvement for Central Railway (CR), the introduction of colour-coded signal wires has successfully reduced signal failures by 25-30 per cent over the past two months, according to Hindustan Times. The new system involves identifying and colour-coding each wire for red, yellow, and green signals, which has streamlined the signalling process and reduced the frequency of failures.
Historically, CR experienced 100-120 signal failures each month. To address this issue, the railway authorities undertook a major initiative to declutter and realign the tangled signal wires. Inspections conducted around April-May revealed that the wires were disorganised and entangled, causing frequent communication issues between the signal poles, tracks, and relay rooms.

"The staff were advised against opening the signal boxes to clean the wires, as this could disrupt the connections," explained a senior CR official in Hindustan Times. "Instead, we opted to reorganise the wiring using a colour-coded system."
The process involved sorting the wires into separate bundles for each signal aspect-red, yellow, and green. These bundles were then properly taped and inserted into each signal pole. This measure has been effective in reducing signal failures and is part of a broader strategy to enhance operational reliability.
The colour-coding initiative was prompted by a recent rail accident where a signal error occurred. The signal displayed yellow to the driver while the control room's panel showed red, leading to the incident. Signal failures typically result in trains having to slow down to less than 10 km/h until the issue is resolved, which can take 30-45 minutes on average.
"The colour coding has significantly improved our ability to manage signal issues," stated another CR official in Hindustan Times. "We plan to extend this realignment process across the entire suburban network within a month."
Each signal pole houses 20-24 wires, which are now colour-coded according to their function, ensuring better clarity and reducing the potential for errors. This overhaul aims to maintain a smoother and more reliable signalling system for Central Railway.
