Who Will Be the Face of Opposition? Bhupinder Hooda Calls Meeting Of Congress MLAs
In a strategic gathering ahead of the Congress legislature party meeting, former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda hosted a meeting with newly elected MLAs at his residence in Delhi. This assembly, attended by 31 legislators, was set against the backdrop of determining the Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly. Despite the formal agenda, Hooda described the gathering as an 'informal meeting', emphasizing unity among the MLAs and indicating that the final decision on the leadership role would be made in the subsequent meeting.

The meeting saw attendance from a significant number of MLAs, including notable figures such as Nirmal Singh, Pooja, Ram Karan, and Ashok Arora, among others. However, a few, namely Chandrmohan Bishnoi, Sally Chaudhary, and Akram Khan, were absent. This convergence of political minds underscored the anticipation surrounding the leadership decision, with nearly 30 legislators rallying behind Hooda for the Leader of the Opposition role. This move suggested a preference to maintain the current leadership structure, counterbalancing the faction within the party aligning with Sirsa MP and Kumari Selja, who represent a challenge to Hooda's leadership.
In the political sphere of Haryana, the BJP, led by Nayab Singh Saini, celebrated a significant victory, marking a third consecutive term in the assembly elections and thwarting the Congress party's attempt to regain a foothold in the state. The election results, announced on October 8, showcased the BJP's dominance with 48 seats, leaving the Congress with 37 seats in the 90-member assembly. This outcome not only highlighted the BJP's continued influence in Haryana but also set the stage for Saini's oath-taking ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Modi.
Amidst these political currents, the Congress party faced its challenges, illustrated by the resignation offer from Congress general secretary in-charge Deepak Babaria following the election results. This gesture reflected the internal contemplations within the Congress party in light of the electoral setback.
To facilitate a smooth legislature party meeting in Chandigarh, the Congress appointed former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Ajay Maken, and Punjab leader Pratap Singh Bajwa as observers. Their role was crucial in navigating the discussions and ensuring a cohesive strategy for the party's future in Haryana. As the party grapples with its leadership dynamics and strategizes for the future, these developments depict a critical juncture in Haryana's political landscape, setting the tone for the upcoming legislative session and beyond.
